Girl fighting for life after near drowning at Trigg Beach
A 12-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital after being caught in a gash at Trigg Beach on Tuesday night.
A WA Police spokesman said police received a report of two swimmers in distress at the beach at around 6.30pm.
“On arrival, it was discovered that two girls, both aged 12, had been caught in a rip current and taken out to sea,” he said.
“One of the girls was rescued by a surfer and brought back to shore safely.
“The second girl was found unresponsive in the water by the same surfer and brought to shore where police, volunteer lifeguards and two off-duty doctors began CPR.”
It was learned that the child was taken to Perth Children’s Hospital where his condition was critical.
The research, which comes as Surf Life Saving WA issues a Christmas safety warning to swimmers, shows the risk of drowning more than triples over bank holidays and long weekends.
“Scorching temperatures predicted have people heading to the beach in groups to cool off over the Christmas and holiday break, but surf lifesavers warn dangers lurk,” said SLSWA chief executive Chris Peck.
“We urge beachgoers to be vigilant about the safety of themselves, their families and friends.”
Swimmers are encouraged to swim at patrolled beaches and ensure that loved ones who visit during the holiday season and are unfamiliar with the beaches remain safe.
