‘There was a hint of charm about it too, as if there was a man I found quite harmless. He loved to kiss my shoes when I came.
‘So I let her because I thought ‘oh, you know what, this is a safe space and she’ll probably get judged somewhere else’ and she’d say ‘please lady, please let me kiss your shoes’ and I’d say ‘oh, go ahead then, hurry up because I’ve got a show in 10 minutes’ and she’d kiss all my shoes and I’d say ‘that’s over then’.’
Paloma concluded: ‘Oddly enough, most of the people in these clubs were people who were less free in the outside world, pretending to be something they were not, and this was a place where they could go from their job behind a desk in HR to wear PVC suspender socks at night, but maybe they needed that because they didn’t have that freedom.’
