Bangladesh: Tarique Rahman’s Address Likely To Spell Political, Diplomatic Agenda | World News

NEW DELHI: A “double-layer” security cordon has been set up across Dhaka ahead of the return of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) deputy leader Tarique Rahman on December 25 after more than 17 years of exile, according to reports from Bangladesh. His return is being described as a pivotal moment for the BNP, where it plans to mobilize and formulate its electoral strategy ahead of the 2026 elections in the absence of its ailing mother, party president Khaleda Zia.

Tarique Rahman is the son of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia and has been acting chairman of the BNP since February 2018.

Now 60, he rose through party ranks in the 1990s and early 2000s, becoming a central figure in BNP organizational politics and youth mobilisation.

He is married to Dr Zubaida Rahman and has a daughter named Zaima Rahman. Tarique spent more than 17 years in exile in London, leaving Bangladesh embroiled in legal cases and political turmoil.

He continued to de facto lead the party during his time abroad, overseeing Britain’s strategy and outreach, while in Bangladesh he faced accusations ranging from corruption to involvement in violence. These convictions were challenged by his followers on the grounds that they were politically motivated.

When his return was announced ahead of the February 2026 general elections, he received widespread coverage in regional media; The BNP held a high-profile reception and signaled its intention to reassert its national presence.

Tarique’s lineage gives him symbolic authority in the BNP’s lower echelons; Tarique represents the continuity of the Zia family’s political legacy and offers a focal point for supporters in turmoil over Khaleda Zia’s poor health and limited public role.

His return is therefore as much about morale and symbolism as it is about day-to-day leadership.

According to reports, BNP leaders have framed his arrival as a catalyst for mass mobilization and party organizers are expecting massive turnout and renewed grassroots energy that, if sustained, could translate into electoral momentum.

Authorities therefore stepped up security arrangements and visitors were banned from entering the airport on Thursday, where they were expected to land at noon Bangladesh time.

His return has reportedly galvanized supporters and strengthened sentiment in the run-up to national elections, but it is also said to threaten the reopening of legal and diplomatic fault lines and provide ammunition among some quarters to question the party’s governance credentials and legal standing.

However, most of the cases against Tariq were allegedly initiated by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is now in exile and the Awami League is barred from contesting the elections.

Domestically, Tarique’s return intensifies the polarized political environment due to the rise of conservatives and fundamentalist forces and widespread rioting and arson.

Internationally, his presence could draw renewed scrutiny from foreign governments and rights watchdogs concerned about political stability and rule of law standards.

Given the current instability at home, the global community will be watching to see whether his return will increase tensions or open space for negotiated political participation.

His speech at the grand reception organized by the BNP will be watched closely to understand his immediate political and diplomatic agenda.

Thursday’s reception is expected to attract around two million people and the BNP has mobilized its supporters and volunteers to ensure the event goes off smoothly, in what is seen as a pivotal moment for the party and its supporters.
