Ukrainian police have previously said the oligarch may have been blown up for his alleged links to a €100 million call center fraud scheme.

Police sources claimed that the violent attack was directly linked to a network of fake call centers in Dnipro, Ukraine, which were allegedly used to commit large-scale financial fraud across Europe.

The Ermolaev family allegedly played an important role in this plan; The oligarch’s name is at the center of a widening Europe-wide investigation into secret call centers operating out of Ukraine.

Ukrainian publication Ukrainska Pravda reported that the assassination attempt stemmed from a failed agreement to share land and unpaid debts allegedly owed to organized crime bosses in Dnipro.

Responding to reports linking him to the ‘boiler room’ scam, Theo Koshlyakov, the businessman’s legal assistant in Monaco, said: ‘To date, no legal proceedings have been taken against Mr Ermolaev in any jurisdiction.’

According to reports, Ermolaev has been living in the principality since 2021.

In 2019, he renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and received a Cypriot passport and was subject to personal sanctions by Kiev in December 2023.

France is assisting in the search for the suspect. Laurent Nuñez, one of the assistants to the French Interior Minister, said yesterday that the police were working ‘to find the perpetrator who escaped’.

There was a claim in the Nice-Matin news outlet that Ermolaev was planning to give a speech to the European Parliament regarding allegations of corruption in Ukraine.
