Australians urged to use ‘high degree of caution’ for all Cambodia travel

Australians planning to travel to Cambodia have been urged to do so with extreme caution as the country’s conflict with Thailand intensifies.

“We have reviewed our advice for Cambodia and raised the overall travel advisory level,” the State Department’s Smart Traveler website said.

“Due to ongoing conflicts and security risks, we now advise a high level of caution in general. The security situation remains unpredictable.”

The cause of the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand dates back more than a century, when the border dispute began in the early 1900s.

The current war began in July 2025 and a ceasefire was reached by US President Donald Trump in October.

However, the ceasefire was broken and armed clashes resumed.

Tens of thousands of Australians visit Cambodia every year for its beautiful landscapes, culture and affordable travel.

The ministry advises people to avoid traveling within 50-80 kilometers of the Cambodian and Thai border due to military attacks, violence and landmines.

Within the marked radius is the province of Siem Reap, where the famous Angkor Wat temple is located.

Australians are advised to rethink their need to travel 50-80 kilometers from the border in the major cities of Battambang and Siem Reap.

Travel within 50 kilometers of the border should be completely avoided in the following areas: Banteay, Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Battambang, Pailin, Pursat and Koh Kong.

The website encourages travelers to regularly check media for updates, follow instructions from local authorities and “pay close attention to your personal safety.”
