Police release two teenage girls arrested over alleged Mordialloc beach assault

Two young girls who were arrested as part of the police investigation into the beach attack were released without charge.

A 13-year-old girl was slightly injured in the attack near Mordialloc Pier in Melbourne’s south-east on December 17, according to Victoria Police.

“It is alleged he was approached by two girls before he was attacked near a toilet block near Mordialloc Pier,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

“A man aged 50-60 intervened and stopped the attack.”

On Friday, police announced that two 15-year-old girls were arrested and questioned in connection with the incident, before being released pending further investigation.

Investigators have appealed for anyone who was at the scene or has footage of the incident, including the man who intervened, to come forward as the investigation continues.

Last week Victoria Police said the attack was unrelated to a later outbreak of violence off the coast of Mordialloc on December 17.

Dozens of teenagers were caught on video storming into a Woolworths in Mordialloc and harassing supermarket staff and shoppers.

Footage spread on social media shows the young people later clashing with the police on the beach.

Kingston City Council Mayor Georgina Oxley condemned the “anti-social and dangerous behaviour”.

“Our thoughts are with Woolworths staff, customers and members of the public who were caught up in a frightening and distressing situation, including those who were spending time on the shore when the incident escalated,” it said in a statement.

“No one should feel unsafe going about their day, whether at work, shopping or relaxing by the sea.

“We thank Victoria Police for their rapid response and control of the situation. The council continues to work closely with the police to support the safety of the community, especially during the busy summer period.”
