In a year filled with disaster and destruction, it was the quiet courage that turned moments of crisis into stories of survival, from Coast Guard rescue swimmers to local firefighters, emergency responders, and ordinary citizens.
Camp Mystic warden dies trying to save campers during floods in Texas
On July 4, 2025, catastrophic flooding along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, Texas, devastated Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp that had been in operation for nearly a century.
Dick Eastland, Camp Mystic’s longtime manager and co-owner, died trying to rescue campers as rapidly rising floodwaters breached the campsites before dawn.
Eastland, who had led the camp since the 1970s, was widely remembered by former campers and staff as a father figure and a selfless leader whose final moments reflected a lifetime spent protecting the children in his care.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that his last act of kindness and sacrifice was to save the lives of the campers,” said Paige Sumner, a former camper and friend of Eastland’s.
More than 700 campers and counselors were at Camp Mystic at the time of the flood. Twenty-seven girls and counselors were killed when the Guadalupe River flowed through a low-lying area of the camp, rising from 14 feet to 29.5 feet in just 60 minutes. The camp could not be completely evacuated before the flood waters arrived.
The devastating flood ultimately killed at least 136 people in Central Texas and triggered a widespread review of emergency preparedness and warning systems. Community leaders and lawmakers recognized Eastland’s bravery, calling his final actions emblematic of the quiet heroism displayed during one of the year’s deadliest natural disasters.
Coast Guard swimmer saves 165 people from floods in Texas
A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer from New Jersey has been hailed as a hero for his role in lifesaving efforts during deadly flooding in Central Texas.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Scott Ruskan, 26, rescued 165 people as the only triage coordinator in the field amid the chaotic flood response in and around Camp Mystic.

“United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Petty Officer Scott Ruskin [sic]Directly rescued a staggering 165 victims of devastating flooding in central Texas. This was the first rescue mission of his career and he was the only triage coordinator on scene. Scott Ruskin is an American hero. His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the @USCG,” Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem wrote on X .
Ruskan described seeing a large crowd of “about 200 children at a campsite” and focusing on rescue efforts to get as many people as possible to safety.
Former Georgia officer dies while rescuing 5 people from rip current
A decorated former police officer and former Baltimore Orioles minor leaguer died while rescuing swimmers caught in a rip current off the coast of South Carolina in July, according to authorities and family members.
Chase Childers, 38, entered the water near Pawleys Island on July 13, 2025, after reports of people in danger. Others who tried to help were able to return to shore, but Childers was caught in the current and could not return, police said.

“We would like to release additional information regarding Sunday’s incident,” the Pawleys Island Police Department said in a statement. he said. “The victim, Chase Childers, and another person entered the water to help people in distress. Unfortunately, Mr. Childers was also swept away. He died trying to save others.”
Emergency responders, with assistance from Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard, located Childers’ body approximately 90 minutes after the initial distress call. Officials praised first responders for their efforts and expressed their condolences to the family.
According to the GoFundMe created in Childers’ memory, he was a devoted husband and father who put his own lives above his own, displaying “extraordinary courage and selflessness” in saving a family of five. The page stated that Childers received a lifetime achievement award for saving many lives during his law enforcement career in Cobb County, Georgia.
Heroic ‘band dads’ take down elderly active shooter
On February 1, 2025, an active shooter incident broke out during a band competition at Pasadena Memorial High School in Texas when an 83-year-old man, identified as Dennis Brandl, opened fire in the school auditorium.
One man, a 26-year-old percussion technical consultant, was shot in the shoulder and transported to a Houston-area hospital; where he remained conscious and was expected to recover.
Before police could fully respond, a group of four fathers, known as the “band dads”, each with a military or law enforcement background, sprung into action. The men ran toward the sound of gunfire, grabbed the suspect, and disarmed him, preventing further injuries at the crowded event.

“When everyone started screaming and yelling, when the shots fired, Joe and I looked at each other and ran straight for the door,” Army veteran Adam Curow told FOX 26. “When we walked in, Polo and Abram were right behind us as a group of dads.”
Pasadena ISD police officers, along with civilians and community members, helped subdue Brandl until law enforcement was able to secure the scene. Brandl later told police he believed he was being followed and feared he and his wife would be killed, authorities said.
The Houston Police Department praised the men involved, including HPD Sgt. Joe Sanchez, who attended the event, was thanked for his determined behavior.
“When danger struck, HPD Sergeant Joe Sanchez did not hesitate,” the department wrote in its statement about X. “While attending a marching band competition at a Pasadena school, Sergeant Sanchez was among those who took swift action to protect lives. This month, he celebrates his 33rd year with HPD. We are grateful for his service.”
The father who jumped into the ocean to save his daughter who fell off the Disney ship
A dramatic ocean rescue occurred aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship after a 5-year-old girl fell overboard while navigating international waters between the Bahamas and Florida’s Port Everglades, officials said.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on June 29, 2025, when the boy lost his balance while sitting on a railing near the porthole on Deck 4 and fell back into the ocean. After the girl’s mother informed her husband, the child’s 37-year-old father jumped into the water to save the girl.

Investigators said the father located his daughter and treaded water with her until rescue crews arrived, when the ship’s “man overboard” alarm was heard and the crew initiated an emergency response. Officials said the total time from the child’s fall to his rescue was approximately 20 minutes.
Security video confirmed the family’s account, and authorities stated that the ship’s crew made a quick rescue due to training in dropping people overboard.
“The crew of the Disney Dream ship quickly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told Fox News Digital, praising the crew’s quick action.

The father and daughter were evaluated by the ship’s medical staff and transferred to the hospital after the ship docked. Authorities said the family, who lives out of state, requested privacy and described the outcome as a potentially tragic incident.
