He spoke to coach Chris Fagan over Christmas as his private life is a constant subject of tabloid news. Sources with knowledge of the discussions said Fagan supported Neale’s decision to prioritize his family and step down as captain.

Neale, whose contract expires at the end of the year and is an unrestricted free agent, faces a difficult year with uncertainty about his future.

Having transferred from Fremantle to the Lions, the prospect of returning to the Dockers would be an obvious attraction if he tries to make a move to be closer to his children.

The Lions have confirmed that Neale has given up the captaincy.

“Neale has shared this role alongside Harris Andrews for the last three seasons, leading the club to three major finals and back-to-back championships,” the Lions said in a statement. he said.

“After a difficult personal period, the 32-year-old has decided that this is the best move for himself and his club.”
