Kagiso Rabada returns as South Africa announce 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2026; Delhi Capitals star misses out

South Africa has announced its 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup and Kagiso Rabada is back in the squad. However, a star from Delhi Capitals missing out on selection sparked controversy as the selectors named the squad for the global tournament.
Kagiso Rabada was recalled as South Africa named a dynamic 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, but there was no room for Delhi Capitals star Tristan Stubbs in the headline-making selection call. T20I skipper Aiden Markram will lead an established but forward-looking South African unit that blends a group of established match-winners with World Cup debutants. The squad includes Quinton de Kock, who has reversed his international retirement, as well as powerful batsman David Miller and emerging batting talents Dewald Brevis and Tony de Zorzi.
Cricket South Africa has confirmed that Corbin Bosch, Brevis, de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka and Jason Smith have received their first T20 World Cup call-ups, underlining a clear investment in the next generation.
Rabada returns to leading tempo
Rabada’s return from the rib injury that kept him out of the T20I series against India has significantly boosted South Africa’s seams. Anrich Nortje forms a strong pace centre, along with Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch, providing the Proteas with a diverse fast bowling arsenal to suit Indian conditions.
Young prodigy Kwena Maphaka adds an exciting left-arm option, while Jansen’s all-round talent further deepens the balance of the XI. Keshav Maharaj will spearhead the spin department with support from all-rounder George Linde, with Markram and Ferreira providing part-time options.
Stubbs and Rickelton make headlines
Despite his impressive T20 franchise form, Tristan Stubbs, one of Delhi Capitals’ key players in the IPL, did not make the cut for the global event. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton is another notable omission; as the selectors preferred a flexible middle order built around the versatile depth of Miller, Ferreira and Smith, as well as Jansen.
The exceptions underline the fierce competition for strike positions, with Brevis and de Zorzi gaining an advantage due to their dynamic ability and current performances.
Group D competition awaits the Proteas
South Africa, which finished second in the 2024 tournament, finds itself in Group D with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Their campaign kicks off against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9, with the aim of improving further and finally breaking free of their near-existing reputation in ICC events.
Selectors hope this balanced mix of experience and youth talent can deliver the country’s first men’s T20 World Cup title after a painful narrow miss in 2024.
