CBS ends Colbert’s Late Show as ratings sink amid growing bias concerns

This year strongly signaled the end of the broadcast network era for the late-night comedy show. CBS made a bold move by announcing that they were giving “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” just one more season. During the Johnny Carson era, his show dominated the airspace. Today, “comedians” appeal to a left-wing audience in a method that resembles group therapy.
President Donald Trump’s reelection was a strong signal that the ever-increasing cynicism about the “Orange Man” is not keeping him from winning. But liberal pundits still equated comedians with democracy. On ABC’s “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin dramatically declared that her decision to stop losing money to Colbert was not financial (as CBS claimed). “This is the dismantling of our democracy. This is the dismantling of our Constitution.” He brought up his old point about liberals “speaking truth to power.” But they never tell the truth to “power” when their favorites win. They did not “tell the truth” when former President Joe Biden was clearly in cognitive decline.
In 2025, late-night comedians’ most memorable moments were irredeemable abominations. Take Jon Stewart’s Monday-only gig on “The Daily Show” in February, mocking the free market. “Capitalism, by definition, is exploitative. It works that way. That’s fine. But then the role of government should be to mitigate the negative effects of this exploitation on Americans, not to support this betrayal with our money.” [bleeped] Diddy’s at his party and they’re making us buy baby oil!”
This isn’t as bad as when Stewart’s former aide, John Oliver, snubbed former President Ronald Reagan on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” in March. “I’ll admit that you can say positive things about Reagan, like, ‘He was our only president to make a movie with a chimpanzee,’ or ‘He’s dead.’ But his moral clarity might come as a surprise to gay people living in the 1980s. I’m just saying, if you brought Reagan back from the dead and told him all the racist bullshit Trump managed to do in less than two months, he’d cum so hard he’d die again.”
JIMMY KIMMEL SAYS RISING DIFFICULTIES UNDER TRUMP ADMINISTRATION, MOCKS THE PRESIDENT ABOUT SHOW’S RETURN

The midnight guests knew how to address their hosts. When Trump took over operations at the Kennedy Center, actor Nathan Lane started a rant on the Colbert show mocking what Trump would perform on stage. “Like tomorrow night, there’s a youth choir made up entirely of Elon Musk’s kids. Since he called off his ‘Hamilton’ engagement, they’re producing Lee Greenwood’s rap musical, a tribute to Ronald Reagan, starring Kanye West. It’s called ‘Trickle Down.’ It’s followed by a new production of ‘The Sound of Music,’ told from the Nazis’ point of view. Trust me, you don’t want to hear a list of their favorite things.”
Even America was trashed for re-electing Trump. British actor Alan Cumming performed the dominance dance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show in July. “America, how are you? No, really, how are you? I mean, how are you doing, other than being a country that has reintroduced concentration camps, taken away health care from 17 million people to give tax breaks to billionaires, and also funds armed militias of masked men who commit heinous kidnappings and crimes against humanity on a daily basis? Apart from all that, are you okay? I wouldn’t think so.”
This might help people understand why these shows are dropping in the ratings. You have to have a special category of hate to end your day with these words. NewsBusters’ Alex Christy found that 92% of political jokes told on late-night shows were about conservatives; this rate was 82% in 2024. The guest list was even worse, almost unanimously left-wing, 99%: 196 liberals versus just two conservatives. Jimmy Fallon’s chat with Greg Gutfeld revealed just how rare this is.

The worst midnight moment of the year was definitely Jimmy Kimmel’s brazen lie about Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin’s political views. “We hit a new low over the weekend as the MAGA mob desperately tried to label this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as one of their own and did everything they could to score political points off of it.”
OK, it was a new low. It was a time of mourning, not of mockery and lies. The two station affiliates decided to refuse to air Kimmel’s show, so ABC shut him down for four shows. Four reruns of “Family Feud.” But the elitist media threw a tantrum for a month. CNN host Jake Tapper declared on the Seth Meyers show: “I thought this was the most direct violation of free speech by the government that I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”

Kimmel finished the year by winning the “Alternative Christmas Message” award on the UK’s Channel 4; Here, like his guest Alan Cumming, Kimmel called America a “righteous mess” and a collapsing democracy in a country full of idiots. “We’re not smart. We’re Americans. Nobody knows better than you, we’re always a little late to the game, but can we finally make it? Maybe. Give us about three years. Please.”
ABC only extended Kimmel’s contract by one year because there’s only so much money a business is willing to lose for someone’s utterly disgusting “freedom of speech.” Since Kimmel is not interested in broadcasting, only narrowcasting, he may still follow Colbert.
