Agrileaf Exports Private Limited, based at Nidle in Dakshina Kannada, has developed a fully functional prototype of an AI-based arecanut grading and sorting machine, according to its Founder and Chief Executive Officer Avinash Rao.

Mr. Rao said the AI-assisted, computer-based arecanut grading technology, an initiative of the company’s co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Athishay Jain, can be used to separate the four classes of arecanut. Hindu. The degrees are chali, ulli, fator and karigot.

80% accuracy

“The AI-based technology developed is 80% accurate in detecting and separating grades of arecanut,” Mr. Rao said, adding that it would take another six months to develop it into a deployable product. He said the technology could be further developed to identify and separate other classes of arecanut.

Mr Rao said the company, which produces biodegradable tableware and packaging materials from arecan nut leaves, used artificial intelligence-based technology two years ago to develop an algorithm to sort tableware in terms of quality. AI-powered technology is now used to classify and sort arecanuts. “We have done this in good faith. Now cooperative organizations interested in arecanut will have to come forward to develop the deployable machine that can be used by farmers and organizations. The company will transfer the technology as per procedures,” he said.

The CEO said that the company will not focus on commercial production of the machines because it is not its own field of activity.

Delegation from cooperative bodies

Meanwhile, a delegation of leaders of cooperative organizations dealing with arecanut visited the company on January 5, 2026 and witnessed the operation of the machine.
