Europe has been thrown into chaos after winter storms and freezing weather disrupted travel across the continent. While hundreds of flights were canceled and passengers were stranded at airports, icy roads caused a 1000-kilometer traffic jam in Paris.
The cold weather brought heavy snowfall at the start of the week, causing misery for travelers while providing winter fun for others. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam canceled 700 flights on Monday; This accounts for more than half of the flights scheduled to take off or land. Authorities blamed the winter season for the cancellations. In the videos shared on social media channels, it is seen that airport staff are having fun in the snow, and some of them are making snowmen.
Meanwhile, meteorologists have issued an orange weather warning for snow and ice across much of northwestern France and Paris.
Freezing weather forced Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports to reduce flights by 15%.
Heavy traffic jams in the French capital forced drivers to sit in their vehicles for hours. At one point, police reported a queue that stretched a staggering 1,000 kilometers.
The lockdown came after French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot ordered an 80 km/h (50 mph) speed restriction on Paris roads.
According to French media, winter conditions tragically claimed the lives of six people. Despite the travel chaos, some still found time to enjoy the winter snow in the French capital.
Some Parisians decided to take a day off work and put on their ski clothes before heading to Montmartre. They were photographed skiing down the hill with France’s iconic Sacre Coeur cathedral in the background.
Eurostar train services were also disrupted due to winter conditions and passengers faced significant delays. Six trains running between St Pancras International and Paris Gare de Nord have been cancelled.
