US discussing options to acquire Greenland, including use of military
The White House said President Donald Trump is discussing “a range of options” to buy Greenland, including the use of the US military.
The White House told the BBC that Trump had made clear that purchasing Greenland was a “national security priority.”
“The President and his team are discussing a number of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and of course using the U.S. military is always an option available to the Commander in Chief,” the White House said.
This comes after Trump said again over the weekend that the US “needs” Greenland (a semi-autonomous region of NATO member Denmark) for security reasons.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned on Monday that any US attack would mean the end of NATO.
NATO is a trans-Atlantic military grouping where allies are expected to come to each other’s aid in the event of external attack.
The issue of Greenland’s future resurfaced following the US military intervention in Venezuela; Meanwhile, elite troops captured the country’s President Nicolás Maduro and took him to face drug and weapons charges in New York.
A day after the raid, Katie Miller, the wife of one of Trump’s senior aides, posted a map of Greenland on social media in American flag colors with the words “SOON” written next to it.
On Monday, her husband, Stephen Miller, said “the official position of the US government is that Greenland should be part of the US.”
In an interview with CNN, he also said that the United States “is the powerhouse of NATO.” He said that in order for the United States to secure the Arctic region and protect and defend NATO and NATO interests, Greenland must of course be part of the United States.
Asked repeatedly whether the United States would refuse to use force to annex it, Miller replied: “No one is going to fight the United States over the future of Greenland.”
