As details of Minnesota’s massive social services fraud exploded on social media over the Christmas holiday, it was hard to miss the contrast between the response of Republicans and Democrats. While Republicans were outraged, Democrats downplayed the problem and denied its existence.
We see a common denominator in every new revelation of systematic fraud against American taxpayers. Protections against fraud were deliberately bypassed in pursuit of progressive political goals. Whether by incompetence or design, Democratic policies have turned the federal treasury into a piggy bank for crooks.
American taxpayers have always been a big target. But the industrial scale of the fraud that emerged last year stems from programs designed with glaring vulnerabilities that appear designed for exploitation.
The extent of the theft is staggering. An estimated $9 billion or more was stolen from Minnesota’s Medicaid and social service programs under Democratic Gov. Tim Walz; that’s potentially half of the $18 billion under management. Politicians waived inspections, ignored whistleblowers, and relaxed verification rules in favor of equity-based distributions, effectively inviting out-of-state “rogue tourists” to set up shell companies.

Billions of dollars have been claimed by dead people, duplicate applicants or fake businesses, thanks to programs like expanded unemployment insurance and PPP loans, waived ID verifications and rush distributions framed as equity measures for urban and minority voters.

Conclusion? Critics point to intentional design flaws that prioritized fast-track entry over security to appease progressive bases and broaden potential voter demographics, while asylum rates fell from 51% at the beginning of 2024 to 19% by August 2025 as fraud courts were overwhelmed.
