Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem clashed with CNN host Jake Tapper over his comments shortly after a deadly shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minnesota.
Speaking to the press after an ICE agent in Minneapolis fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, Noem said at a press conference that Good had participated in “domestic terrorism” and was trying to “arm her vehicle” to attack ICE officers.
Tapper asked Noem about her statements, which she said were made before an investigation into the incident was launched.
“Well, everything I said has been proven to be true and true,” Noem said. “This administration wants to operate in a transparent manner. As Secretary of Homeland Security, I have a responsibility to learn this information as quickly as possible. I was in Minneapolis the day before, had already interviewed officers and chiefs in the field, and knew the facts, and decided that the department and the people of this country deserve to know the truth about the situation that unfolded in Minneapolis.”

Summing up his remarks, Tapper said, “With all due respect, Secretary, the first thing you said was: ‘Our ICE officers were on an enforcement action. They were stranded in the snow due to adverse weather conditions in Minneapolis. They were trying to push their vehicle out, and a woman attacked them and those around them and tried to run them over and crash them with her vehicle,'” Tapper said, summing up his remarks. “That’s not what happened. We all saw what happened.”
“That’s absolutely what happened,” Noem said.
He went on to argue that evidence showed Good attempted to block the road and obstruct federal law enforcement investigations, and eventually used his car to attack ICE agents.

Tapper went on to question Noem’s use of the term “domestic terrorist” and how Noem could be confident in her claims.

“And the question is, I have no doubt…in my case, I wasn’t there,” Tapper said. “I didn’t see it. Some say it clearly shows he was trying to hit her and that he did. Some say no, he was clearly trying to move his car and get away. I don’t know. What I’m saying is, how do you know? How can you claim that’s what happened hours before any investigation?”
“The facts of the case are that the vehicle was weaponized and attacked law enforcement. He defended himself and the people around him. That’s the definition. When you have something weaponized against the public and law enforcement, an act of domestic terrorism, it happened on our shores. It happened here in our country. You can’t change the facts just because you don’t like it,” Noem said. Noem said, adding that an investigation into potential motivation is ongoing.

Noem later accused Tapper of pushing an “unrealistic” depiction of the incident, which led Tapper to repeatedly contradict her during the interview.
“We all saw the video. I don’t need to file a lawsuit again. We all saw the video. He’s blocking the street. They’re closing in on him,” Tapper said.

“In your previous encounters with this person, you have not seen the video of the entire morning,” Noem said.
“We broadcast it. Yes, we broadcast it. We were broadcasting on Thursday and stating that he was there for several minutes and minutes and minutes and minutes. He was protesting without asking any questions,” Tapper responded.

“From previous locations that morning, it certainly looks like these vehicles were a block away that you haven’t seen before. There’s more information,” Noem said.
Noem announced early Sunday that the federal government would send hundreds of additional federal officers to Minnesota in response to the shootings.
