J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday rejected the BJP’s new demand to establish National Law University (NLU) in Jammu instead of Kashmir.

Mr. Abdullah said, “Jammu got both IIT and IIM, where was the talk of equality then? There was no demand for regional balance at that time. Today, cries of discrimination are rising even before the decision regarding the National Law University is taken. No decision has been taken yet. Let us decide first.”

Mr. Abdullah’s remarks came in response to the BJP’s idea of settling the NLU in Jammu instead of Kashmir. “NLU should be opened in Jammu and not in Kashmir. It is a national institute and Jammu is a better place as it has better connectivity,” said BJP leader and legislator RS Pathania.

Last year, Mr. Abdullah in a speech had hinted that NLU would operate from Ompora area of Budgam in the Kashmir valley.

The BJP’s demand was the latest demand of its campaign in Jammu after it demanded cancellation of the MBBS selection list at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu’s Katra, where 42 out of 50 candidates are Muslims.
