Bangladeshi singer Proloy Chaki dies in custody; family alleges negligence in treatment by jail authorities

He died in police custody at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Sunday.
Pabna district jail superintendent Omor Faruque confirmed Proloy’s death over the phone: “Proloy Chaki had serious problems related to diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. Therefore, the prison doctors first sent him to Pabna Sadar Hospital and then he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Friday night.”
“He passed away after 9 pm on Sunday while under treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital,” Faruque added.
Proloy belonged to the Awami League and also served as the cultural affairs secretary of the Pabna district unit of the Awami League.
Following a student-led movement in Bangladesh in 2024, when Awami League president and then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went into exile in India, a wave of arrests of Awami League leaders and activists began across the country. During these crackdowns, Proloy was arrested and many lawsuits were filed against him.
According to local media reports, the family alleged negligence in his treatment while he was in prison. However, the prison supervisor denied the allegations.
