Beautiful UK island can be bought for just £50,000 – but there’s a catch | Travel News | Travel

A breathtaking island set in an idyllic setting has hit the market, but potential buyers have been issued a stern warning. Eilean a’ Chapuill, or Horse Island, is surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Complete with its own boathouse and panoramic coastal views, the property is on the market for offers in excess of £50,000. But real estate agents have issued serious advice to prospective owners.
In their listing for the island, they warned: “Due to rapidly changing tides, access to Eilean a’ Chapuill represents a significant health and safety hazard. Accordingly, spectators visiting Eilean a’ Chapuill should do so with extreme caution and do so at their own risk.” The six-acre island is located just off the Knapdale peninsula in the Scottish Highlands. Listing details: “The island is located just off Kilmory beach and has wonderful 360 degree angles over the water towards the mainland and the islands of Jura and Islay. The island can be reached on foot during low tide and also by boat.”
“Crinan, Cairnbaan and Tayvallich are small and charming west coast villages and hamlets leading to and from Eilean a’ Chapuill. Crinan, with its small harbour, canal basin and anchorage, forms the western sea terminus of the Crinan Canal.”
During the summer months, the canal turns into a “colorful spectacle” with boats crossing the waterway to connect to the inland lakes. Also highlighted were the Clyde estuary, the Bute Kyles and the “scenicly spectacular” waters of the western islands.
He continued: “Tayvallich is a picturesque fishing village located on the shores of Loch Sween. It is a popular and sheltered yachting haven with stunning views and a vibrant community that includes many local artists as well as a restaurant, general store and shop.
“The area is known for its dramatic and natural beauty and this has always attracted people to the area, making it a popular tourist destination.”
This isn’t the first time a Scottish island has popped up on the property market recently. In 2025, the 1,110-acre Shuna Island, which includes a castle and holiday homes, was listed for £5.5 million.
Sotheby’s International Realty described the island as “a truly rare offering, rich in heritage, natural wonder and possibilities.” According to Sky News, this area includes the ruins of the 20th-century Shuna Castle and eight estates.
As for animal life, the island is “full of wildlife, from red deer to fallow deer, eagles to dolphins”.
The estate agent also commented: “Whether a regenerative tourism venture or a family property, this remarkable Hebridean island offers extraordinary life lived outside the box.”
