Carville predicts Republicans face 2026 midterm wipeout, RNC disagrees

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville predicted a political “extinction” for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections.

Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters rejected that prediction and said Republicans could defy history and retain control of both chambers.

Carville argued that Democrats could pick up dozens of seats in the House of Representatives and possibly regain control of the Senate. Some Democratic strategists warn that the party faces serious long-term challenges, especially beyond the next election cycle.

“I’m looking at the 2026 election, and frankly, it’s going to be an annihilation,” Carville said on “Saturday in America.”

“Democrats will pick up at least 25 seats, maybe as many as 45. Democrats will probably carry the Senate,” he told Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany.

Gruters backed off that prediction, arguing that signs pointed to Republicans retaining control of both houses of Congress. He acknowledged the ruling party’s historic midterm disadvantage but said Republicans were positioned to “defy history.”

“Our secret weapon is President Trump,” Gruters said in a separate segment on “Saturday in America.”

“He has accomplished more in these first 12 months than most presidents have accomplished in eight years,” he added.

Carville’s comments were made in response to a question. New York Times opinion piece From veteran Democratic strategist David Plouffe, a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, who argues that the party is “still in crisis.”

“Right now, Democrats have no reliable way to maintain control of the Senate and the White House,” Plouffe wrote in a guest article published Jan. 15.

He warned that changes to the Electoral College could further complicate Democrats’ future prospects.

“Following adjustments to the Electoral College map that seem likely to come with the next census, the Democratic presidential nominee could win all the states Kamala Harris won, plus the blue wall of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and still fall short of the 270 electoral delegates needed to win,” Plouffe said. he added.
