A child is in a critical condition after being repeatedly bitten by a shark at a beach in the eastern suburbs of Sydney Harbour.
Emergency services were called to Shark Beach at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse at around 4.20pm on Sunday after reports the child had been attacked.
Police received reports that the child was jumping off rocks and swimming while being bitten multiple times.
Witnesses applied a tourniquet to the boy’s leg before he was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.
“The child, believed to be around 12 years old, is being treated for serious leg injuries by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and first responders at the scene,” police said in a statement.
“The beach is closed and swimmers are advised to avoid wading in the water at this time. No further information is available at this time.”
