Legacy of Records and Endurance

Williams is known for his leadership qualities, technical knowledge and achievements, including:

Nine Spacewalks: Totals 62 hours and 6 minutes, a record for a female astronaut.

Longest Single Flight: His last mission was completed in a record time of 286 days, exceeding the first 10 days due to technical problems with the Boeing Starliner.

“Suni has been a pioneer shaping the future of exploration and paving the way for commercial missions,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “His work laid the foundation for future Artemis missions to the Moon and our future journey to Mars.”

Three Iconic Missions: 2006-2025

Williams’ career began in 1998, when he was selected for the astronaut corps. There were three distinct periods in his career:

STS-116/Discovery 14 (2006)): First trip to space; broke the record for most spacewalks performed

Expedition 32/33 (2012): This was a 127-day flight during which he was the station commander and performed basic maintenance of the ISS power systems.

Starliner/Crew-9 Mission (2024-2025): Originally planned for an Orbital Test Mission in June 2024, problems with the thrusters on the Boeing Starliner led to an extended stay that did not conclude until March 2025, when it landed safely on Earth aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon.

Empowered Roots and World Inspiration

Williams was born in Ohio to parents of Indo-Slovene descent. It has always maintained the link between the two cultures. He encouraged millions of Indians and people around the world by carrying various symbols of his culture into space. These included Bhagavad-Gita and Indian snacks. His father is Dr. Deepak Pandya was from Gujarat, India.

As Williams left NASA, he proudly displayed his lifelong love of the universe:

“Anyone who knows me knows that space is my absolute favorite place to be. The International Space Station, the people, and the science are truly awe-inspiring. I hope the foundation we’ve built has made the next bold steps toward the Moon and Mars a little easier.”
