Telangana cancels car vehicle registration for a year after minor drives on busy road

The Telangana Transport Department on Monday, July 13, 2026, canceled the registration of a vehicle on a busy road in Narsingi, allegedly driven by a minor and accompanied by a Sub-Inspector of Police, for one year.

The action came a day after Sub-Inspector Pujari Thirupathi was punished after his grandson was seen driving the car on Gandhamguda-Bairagiguda road in Narsingi.

The transport ministry said the action was taken under Section 199A(4) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. Authorities warned that vehicle owners or guardians who allow minors to drive will be deemed guilty and fined under the law, while minors will not be eligible for a driver’s license until they turn 25.

So far, the ministry said it has canceled 4,070 vehicle registrations across Telangana in the last financial year due to minors being allowed to drive, reflecting strict implementation of legal provisions.

Directions to authorities

Regarding the implementation of this special section of the JV Act, the Ministry had issued a circular on October 25, 2024 explaining how the implementation mechanism for Section 199A should be implemented. The circular instructed the officers to seize the vehicle registration certificate of the vehicles used by the young people, to forward the young person’s information to the registration authority, to initiate proceedings to cancel the registration of the vehicle for 12 months after the legal process, and to record the young person’s information in the database to ensure that a student or driver’s license is not issued until he reaches the age of 25.
