Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said in a statement to CNBC that there will be a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, where “land deals” regarding Ukraine will be on the table.

“[There’s been] Witkoff said he and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will meet with Ukrainian officials on Wednesday evening before meeting with senior Russian officials, saying a lot of progress has been made in the last six to eight weeks.

“And then Jared and I will meet with the Russians on Thursday evening,” Witkoff told CNBC’s Sara Eisen at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Saying that Putin will be present at the meeting, Witkoff noted that the Kremlin requested a meeting.

Witkoff said that discussions on the US-led 20-point peace plan are making progress.

“We’re bringing everyone closer together…hopefully we’ll have something good to announce soon,” he said.

“[Regarding] “Our 20-point peace plan, we’re massaging it and harmonizing it, and I think we’re reaching agreements now – that was the 800lb elephant in the room – and I think we have some very, very good ideas on that, and hopefully we can make some progress there,” he said.

Asked if he believed Putin would reach an agreement to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine, Witkoff said: “I do.”

Multiple attempts to get Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire have failed, but U.S. pressure and Trump’s impatience with the ongoing conflict that has left hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians dead has helped bring both sides to the negotiating table.

Entrenched obstacles to the peace deal included Russian demands that Ukraine hand over the eastern Donbas region and Ukraine’s demands for security guarantees from Western partners to deter Russia from invading Ukraine again in the future.
