Big boost for pensioners as Centre extends Atal Pension Yojana till 2030-31; check details

Atal Pension Yojana offers a guaranteed minimum pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month.

The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of the flagship Atal Pension Yojana (APY) till the financial year 2030-31. This also includes expanding funding support for promotional and development activities and gap financing. APY, which was launched on May 9, 2015, aims to provide old-age income security to workers in the unorganized sector.

Atal Pension Yojana has been extended

The official statement made after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the program will continue until 2030-31 with government support for promotional and development activities for expansion of outreach among unorganized workers, including awareness and capacity building.

What is Atal Pension Yojana?

APY offers a guaranteed minimum pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month from age 60, based on contributions. As of January 19, 2026, more than 8.66 crore subscribers have registered under APY.

What are the main impacts of the APY plan?

  1. It increases financial inclusion and supports India’s transition to a retirement society.
  2. The program also strengthens the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 by providing sustainable social security.

APY plan compliance

  1. APY is open to all Indian citizens who meet the following eligibility criteria:
  2. An individual’s age must be between 18 and 40 years of age.
  3. The person must have a savings bank account or post office savings bank account.
  4. From October 1, 2022, any Indian citizen who is a taxpayer of income tax under the Income Tax Act, 1961, as on the date of application, or has been a taxpayer of income tax in the past, will not be able to open a new APY account.
