‘Sinners’ Makes Oscar History With Record Nominations

Ryan Coogler’s blues-tinged vampire epic “Sinners” broke the record for the most awards in Oscar history by leading all its films into the 98th Academy Awards with 16 nominations on Thursday.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters gave “Sinners” more nominations than ever before, breaking the 14-nomination mark set by “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land.” Coogler was nominated for best picture as well as best director and best screenplay, and double-duty star Michael B. Jordan was rewarded with his first Oscar nomination for best actor.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s father-daughter revolutionary epic “One War Then Another” was the favorite for the nominations, coming in second with 13 nominations. Four of its actors (Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn) were nominated, but newcomer Chase Infiniti was left out for best actress.

Among the top two nominees, the film academy has thrown its all behind the heartfelt and uplifting original American epics, each tied to an alarming national moment. Coogler’s Jim Crow-era film — the rare horror film to win academy acclaim — evokes a mythic allegory about Black life. In “One War in a Row,” the spirit of rebellion dormant in an out-of-control police state is revived.

Both are also from Warner Bros. are games. Amid a contentious sale to Netflix, the 102-year-old studio scored its best Oscar nomination ever. As the fate of Warner Bros., which Netflix acquired for $72 billion, hangs in the balance with a challenge from Paramount Skydance, Hollywood is preparing for potentially the biggest realignment in the history of the film industry.

The 10 films nominated for best picture are: “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” “The Secret Agent,” “Emotional Value,” “Sinners” and “Train Dreams.”

Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme” and Joachim Trier’s “Emotional Value” earned nine nominations.

The ninth edition of “Marty Supreme” included a third best actor nomination for Timothée Chalamet, 30, the favorite in the category he narrowly missed winning last year for “A Complete Unknown.” In addition to Jordan and Chalamet, nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio for “One War Then Another,” Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon” and Wagner Moura for “Secret Agent.”

Best actress favorite Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”) was nominated, along with Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”), Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blue”), Renate Reinsve (“Emotional Value”) and two-time winner Emma Stone, who earned her sixth nomination for “Bugonia.”

“KPop Demon Hunters,” the year’s most-watched movie on Netflix with more than half a billion views, was nominated for both best song (“Gold”) and best animation. Sony Pictures developed and produced the film, but sold it to Netflix and then watched the film become a worldwide sensation.

Blockbuster movies otherwise had a rough morning. Universal Pictures’ “Wicked: For Good” was left out entirely. While “Avatar: Fire and Ash” earned nominations for costume design and visual effects, it became the first “Avatar” film not to be nominated for best picture. The biggest box office hit nominated for Hollywood’s biggest award was Apple’s “F1”. The streamer turned to Warner Bros. to distribute the racing drama. formed a partnership with.

The first category read by hosts Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman was supporting actress. Nominees include Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter LilIeaas for “Emotional Value,” Amy Madigan for “Guns,” Wunmi Mosaku for “Sinners” and Teyana Taylor for “One War Then Another.”

Supporting actor nominees include Jacob Elordi for “Frankenstein”, Sean Penn for “One Battle After Another”, Stellan Skarsgård for “Emotional Value”, Benicio del Toro for “One Battle After Another” and Delroy Lindo for “Sinners”.

This year, the Oscars are introducing a new category to casting. This new honor helped “Sinners” and “War After Another” boost their already impressive stats. In addition to these two films, the nominees include “Hamnet”, “Marty Supreme” and “The Secret Agent”.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on ABC and Hulu. YouTube’s new deal for exclusive streaming won’t take effect until 2029. This year, Conan O’Brien will return as host.
