All NSW beaches are expected to be open over the Australia Day long weekend after shark attacks led to days of closure.

Temperatures above 40C are expected for at least five days in parts of South Australia, Victoria and NSW, prompting heatwave and bushfire warnings.

Sydney can expect a high of 28°C on Saturday before temperatures return to 34°C on Sunday and 27°C again on Monday. Bureau of Meteorology.

Melbourne is expected to see a high of 40 degrees on Saturday, followed by a high of 25 degrees on Sunday and a high of 30 degrees on Monday.

The BoM said the mercury in Adelaide would climb to 42°C on Saturday, then drop slightly to 36°C on Sunday and return to a peak of 43°C on Monday.
