Measles exposure sites in WA: Fiona Stanley Hospital emergency department visited by infected person

WA Health has issued a new measles alert after identifying a busy emergency department as the latest exposure site.

Visitors to Fiona Stanley Hospital’s emergency department between 6.50pm and 10.05pm on Monday night were told to monitor for any symptoms for 18 days after possible exposure.

“The site is linked to the most recent confirmed case in a returning traveler from Bali,” the alert said.

This follows a public health alert Thursday regarding the state’s first case of the year, which identified a handful of exposure sites, including retail stores and a pharmacy.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that usually develops after about 10 days.

Symptoms include fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough followed by a red splotchy rash that appears three or four days later. The rash begins on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

WA had its worst measles caseload in 30 years last year, with a total of 63 cases after clusters in the South West, Pilbara and metro area.

Health officials are urging people to check their vaccination status to make sure the measles-containing vaccine is up to date.
