Car crashes through Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal

Authorities are investigating after a car crashed through the entrance of Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal on Friday, Jan. 23.

In the statement made by the Wayne County Airport Authority, it was stated that the accident occurred at around 19.30 on Friday and the vehicle crashed into the ticket office.

Authorities said the driver was taken into custody. All six people were treated by the authority’s fire department.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Michele Wheaton, 54, of Pontiac, said whatever the cause, it made a terrible noise.

Wheaton said he had just returned from a trip to Puerto Rico with his loved ones on the Friday evening when the crash occurred.

He said that as he was heading towards the arrivals area to be picked up, he heard a loud explosion of metal and glass.

“I stopped and said, ‘Anyone hear this?’ “I looked around,” he said. “Because you heard the loud crash and then you heard people screaming.”

Wheaton said he saw security guards running. One of them asked if he had called 911, saying a car had crashed in the Delta area.

Wheaton said he already had his luggage in hand and was sorting it out of the building to board. He told his mother to get away from there.

Although details of the incident were not disclosed, Wheaton expressed his regret for the events that took place during the evening and the dangerous events that occurred at public gathering points.

“It’s very sad that you can’t travel, you can’t go to the movies, your church or the grocery stores,” he said.
