Laura Kuenssberg humiliates Lib Dem Ed Davey with brutal slap downs | Politics | News

Laura Kuenssberg brutally ripped into Sir Ed Davey this morning for his ridiculous claims about Donald Trump and his failure to capitalize on Labour’s chaos to strengthen the Liberal Democrats. Sir Ed Davey was appearing on the flagship interview show on Sunday morning to promote his new policy of issuing World War II-style ‘war bonds’ to boost defense spending by up to £20bn.
However, he cast doubt on Britain’s alleged diplomacy. Donald Trump He played no part in causing him to back down when threatened to invade Greenland. Sir Ed argued that victory in Greenland was secured by the EU threatening retaliatory tariffs. The claim prompted Ms Kuenssberg to point out that Sir Ed does not know the inside of Donald Trump’s head.
He argued: “How did we get Trump to back down on Greenland? It wasn’t the UK, it was the EU that said ‘we have a bazooka retaliatory tariff’ that hit the US stock market. No doubt President Trump’s billionaire friends said ‘wait a minute, this is hitting us in the pocket Donald, maybe you should step back’.”
Ms. Kuenssberg asked: “Have you gotten inside Donald Trump’s brain? I mean, look, a lot of people are making predictions.”
“David Lammy said it was about the UK edition and who knows, maybe it was a little of both.
“But you certainly can’t argue categorically why Donald Trump backed down.”
Ms Kuenssberg then turned to Sir Ed’s leadership of the Liberal Democrats; This leader currently appears stagnant in the polls despite winning a large number of seats in the 2024 elections.
The Liberal Democrats have moved ahead of the Green Party in many polls, thanks in large part to their charismatic new leader, Zack Polanski.
Ms Kuenssberg produced statistics showing Liberal Democrat membership was miles behind both the Greens and Reform.
He argued: “So let’s talk about your position. “The Liberal Democrats had a great general election in terms of bums in the seats, but when you look at the latest polls you’re lagging behind Reform, while the Greens are stepping it up.
“You have more than 10 times the number of MPs than Reform, but if you look at party membership we look at the numbers. The Green Party currently has 170,000, Reform has more than 270,000 and your numbers are far behind at 59,000.”
Sir Ed Davey insisted he was genuinely proud of his membership but insisted membership was “not the key metric I focus on”.
“I’m more focused on winning. I believe we have a moral responsibility to win.”
Last week, The Guardian reported that a significant number of Liberal Democrat MPs were “frustrated” by Sir Ed’s “overly cautious approach” and lack of resolution.
One MP said: “Morale is low… Nobody is saying get rid of Ed. But those around him are saying the party needs to move at significant pace towards developing a national story to tell. We need to be a bit more serious about being a third party.”
“Reform is gaining ground in the national debate, and so are the Greens. We’re content not to do it. And that’s not good enough.”
