Fisherfolk oppose Mamallan Reservoir project at Gram Sabhas

On Monday, fishermen in several villages along the East Coast Highway opposed the creation of the Mamallan Reservoir. They submitted petitions in the Gram Sabhas held on Republic Day and sought a decision.

According to community leader K. Bharathi, people from Kanathur Reddikuppam, Kovalam and Nemmeli have submitted petitions stating that their livelihood will be lost if the reservoir is established. “In some places, government officials refused to accept petitions and did not agree to take decisions because it was against the government’s proposal,” he said.

Community leader MD Dayalan questioned the logic behind panchayats passing resolutions against the new 100-day job guarantee scheme against the Central government and not passing resolutions against the State government.
