According to Panchang, Magha Shukla Ekadashi will start at 4.34pm on January 28 and will end at 1.56pm on January 29. Since Ekadashi tithi prevails during the day on January 29, the Jaya Ekadashi fast will be observed on Thursday, January 29.
Jaya Ekadashi vrat rules
Jaya Ekadashi vrat is observed in two ways: Nirjala and Falahari. Healthy people can observe Nirjala fast, which involves abstinence from food and water. Those who are elderly or sick are advised to follow the Falahari fast, which allows fruit and water.
On this day, devotees worship Lord Krishna and offer fruits, Panchamrit and other simple offerings. Many fast by consuming only fruit and water throughout the day.
What to do on Jaya Ekadashi
For planetary peace, devotees are advised to place an image or idol of Lord Vishnu on a yellow cloth facing east. A lamp is lit and a kalash is worn. Clothes, fruits, flowers, betel leaves and betel nuts are offered. Devotees then pray for relief from planetary troubles by offering water with their right hand.
In the evening, Jaya Ekadashi vrat katha is rested followed by Falahari meal. If possible, devotees chant any mantra of Lord Vishnu or Shri Krishna at night. These remedies applied with faith are believed to bring the grace of Shri Krishna.
Jaya Ekadashi: What to avoid
On Jaya Ekadashi, devotees are encouraged to help the needy and pledge support to those in distress. It is considered auspicious to light an oil lamp under peepal and banana trees. People are advised to stay away from tamasic foods, negative thoughts and inappropriate behavior and focus their minds on devotion to Lord Krishna. Those who are not in good health should avoid strict fasting and instead follow the rules of vrat without fasting. Devotees believe that by keeping these rules in mind, they can reap the spiritual benefits of Jaya Ekadashi and get rid of many difficulties in life.
