Matt Goodwin: GB News presenter who ate page of his book after wrong election prediction unveiled as Reform candidate
Reform UK has announced its candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election, with the Great Britain News presenter once eating a page out of his own book.
Matt Goodwin has been announced as the party’s candidate, a day after Nigel Farage claimed Reform UK’s chances were “significantly better” after Labor blocked Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham from running for the north-west seat.
Speaking at a party press conference in his constituency on Tuesday, Mr Goodwin said: “This by-election is a referendum on Keir Starmer.”
The professor of politics and honorary president of the organization Students4Reform added: “This is a chance for the law-abiding, tax-paying people in this seat to have their say about Keir Starmer and make political history.”
The politics professor ate his own book live on Sky News in 2017 after incorrectly predicting that Labor would not get as much as 38 per cent of the vote under Jeremy Corbyn.
The right-wing activist also sparked criticism last year when he was accused of suggesting that people from minority ethnic backgrounds are not necessarily British even if they were born in the UK.
Following a mass stabbing on a train in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, Mr Goodwin blamed “mass uncontrolled immigration” in a post blaming X.
After it was revealed the suspect was born in the UK, Goodwin wrote: “So were all the 7/7 bombers. It takes more than a piece of paper to make someone ‘British’.”
The comments were criticized by the Liberal Democrats as “racist rhetoric” and a “disgrace”.
The Gorton and Denton by-election is expected to be held on February 26 after former MP Andrew Gwynne stepped down for health reasons last week.
