SIR in Gujarat: 6.88 lakh seek inclusion, 9.88 lakh deletion in electoral rolls

As Gujarat moves towards finalizing voter lists, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process has resulted in 6.88 lakh applications for addition of names and 9.88 lakh requests for deletion, election officials said on Thursday (January 29, 2026).
According to a statement issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Gujarat, the draft electoral rolls were released on December 19 after the completion of the counting phase of the SIR. Voters were allowed to request the inclusion or deletion of names by submitting prescribed forms.
The statement stated that as of January 28, election officials received 6.88 lakh Forms 6 and 6A to add names, while 9.88 lakh Form 7 applications were submitted to be deleted from the lists.
The final decision on additions and deletions will be made after the applications and supporting documents are verified, officials said.
The implementation of SIR has led to a significant pruning of the voter list in the state. A total of 73.73 lakh voters were removed during the revision, reducing the number of registered voters in the draft to 4.34 crore from 5.08 crore earlier.
It was found that out of 73,73,327 voters removed, 18,07,278 were dead, 9,69,662 were absent, 40,25,553 had migrated from Gujarat and 3,81,470 were registered at more than one place. Officials also said that 1,89,364 voters were deleted for other reasons.
