Double murderer’s final words before his execution revealed | World | News

A Texas man sentenced to death said shortly before his lethal injection that his execution “created more victims and traumatized more people” 28 years after his crimes. In his final words, he also expressed hope that his victims’ families would “find forgiveness in their hearts.” Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was found guilty of the brutal shooting of his ex-girlfriend Glenda Dennise Hayslip and her new partner Darren Keith Cain in their home in 1998.
Before the execution was carried out, he said: “I hope the victims’ family, extended family and loved ones can find forgiveness in their hearts and that you can begin to heal and get through this. [There is] There is no winner in this situation, after 28 years more victims are created and more people are traumatized.
“I’m sorry for what I did. I’m sorry for what happened and I just want to say to all of you, I love you and keep Jesus in your life, keep Jesus first.”
Thompson died by lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville on Wednesday, and his death was confirmed at 6:50 p.m. local time. He became the first person to be executed in the United States in 2026.
Following the lethal injection, Thompson breathed loudly and began snoring after a few breaths, AP News reported. His body later became immobile and he was pronounced dead 22 minutes later.
According to court records, Thompson arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s house around 3 a.m. in 1998 and a violent argument ensued.
Despite police intervention and instructions to leave, he returned a few hours later and opened fire on both of them, according to court records.
Cain was shot four times, while Hayslip suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and cheek. While Cain was pronounced dead at the scene, Hayslip succumbed to his injuries at the hospital a week later.
After his conviction for the murders, Thompson escaped custody and remained on the run for three days.
