Johnny Depp looks completely unrecognisable as he’s seen for the first time on set filming Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol with Andrea Riseborough

There is perhaps more than a little irony about Johnny Depp’s return to Hollywood.
Exclusive photos show the star returning to set as Charles Dickens’ anti-hero Ebenezer Scrooge in the new adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
Depp plays a man on the outside of society who is forced to confront his evils before emerging as a changed man.
It will be his first big-budget film in four years, following a 2022 court showdown in which he was accused of harassing his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, in a case that underscored their volatile relationship.
Aside from her appearance in the French-language film Jeanne du Barry, it turns out the major studios overlooked her.
But if the Pirates of the Caribbean star is now reinventing himself, the 63-year-old actor looked absolutely unrecognizable in character in his new role.
As the shooting of the new adaptation of A Christmas Carol began in the United Kingdom, Johnny Depp was seen for the first time as Ebenezer Scrooge.
The Hollywood star looked almost unrecognizable in her Victorian outfit as she smiled between takes alongside Andrea Riseborough, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Past.
Depp wore a blue brocade coat and a black hat and had long gray sideburns.
The actor was seen shivering and laughing between takes with his co-star Andrea Riseborough.
Dickens’ classic 1843 novel follows old miser Scrooge, who is visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future.
Starring as the ghost of Christmas Past, Riseborough, 44, wore a makeshift white dress and a white wig and appeared to have white contact lenses in her eyes to complete the ghostly effect.
The production’s cast includes Sir Ian McKellen, Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley, Ellie Bamber from Bohemian Rhapsody, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Tramell Tillman from Severance and Sam Claflin, who starred in The Hunger Games.
But it faces tough competition. Another version of the film, directed by Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers and starring Willem Defoe, is also being produced by Warner Bros.
Depp has described reports about his life over the past few years as ‘fantastic, horribly written fiction’ and dismissed any notion that he was not working.
‘I’ve made about 17 comebacks and I don’t understand it because I haven’t gone anywhere,’ he said in 2023. ‘This is a strange mystery.’

It offered an early look at the set of the festive retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, proving that not even Scrooge can stay grumpy on camera.
