India to purchase oil from Venezuela, not Iran? US President Trump says… | India News

US President Donald Trump claimed that India will buy oil from Venezuela instead of Iranian oil. Meanwhile, he also said that China’s purchase of Venezuelan oil was “welcome.”
However, there has been no statement from the Indian government on the issue yet.
Addressing reporters on Air Force One, according to ANI, he said: “China can come and make a big deal on oil. We have already made a deal. India is coming and they will buy Venezuelan oil instead of buying it from Iran. So we have already prepared the concept of the deal.”

Venezuela oil trade
Trump had previously announced that Venezuela offered “50 million barrels of oil” worth $5.2 billion to the United States and that he accepted this agreement.
Trump also praised the “great relationship” with Venezuela’s interim government, which was established after the United States captured former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation.
Following Maduro’s capture, Trump made clear that Washington would “manage” Venezuela during the transition period and that they needed “full access to oil and other things in their country.”
US-India tariff tensions
In August 2025, Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India, citing the country’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
According to IANS, the White House had stated that the decision was aimed at strengthening the measures taken within the scope of sanctions previously imposed against Russia following its actions in Ukraine. The US President had previously announced a 25 percent customs duty on India.
The order stated that New Delhi directly or indirectly imports oil from Moscow, which it sees as a threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
