A man identified in court filings as having an affair with former senator Kyrsten Sinema reportedly received nearly $9,000 from Sinema’s former campaign committee in October. The applications come just weeks after the man’s estranged wife accused Sinema of ruining their marriage.
According to a report prepared by noterefers to the newly opened Federal Election Commission (FEC) documentThe buyer was Matthew J Ammel, who worked as a security guard at the Cinema. He was reportedly paid $1,815.91 on Oct. 15 and $7,136.14 on Oct. 31 in what was described as “payroll” payments, according to a filing filed by Sinema for Arizona on Saturday.
FEC records show Ammel received more than $128,000 total between July 2024 and October 2025 from Sinema for Arizona and a separate political action committee affiliated with the former senator.
The filing also shows that Sinema has officially shut down the Sinema for Arizona committee, which spent hundreds of thousands of dollars last year on expenses that appeared largely unrelated to campaign activities.
These expenses included plane tickets, accommodation, concert and event tickets, as well as “medical services” for security guards. The spending occurred after Sinema left office in January 2025 and followed other unusual late expenses, including hotel stays in Saudi Arabia and gifts from Taylor Swift’s official store.
Between October 1 and December 31, the committee returned nearly $600,000 to donors and spent about $200,000 on other expenses such as salaries and airfare.
In the lawsuit filed in North Carolina, Ammel’s wife, Heather Ammel, accused Sinema of damaging her marriage. the suit claims The cinema purchased gifts and concert tickets for Ammel and encouraged drug use, including promoting psychedelic treatments that he allegedly financed.
In Heather Ammel’s lawsuit, Sinema claims that Matthew and Heather Ammel had a “good and loving marriage” with “true love and affection” before she intervened and pursued Matthew Ammel even though she knew he was married.
According to the lawsuit, the Arizona lawmaker’s security chief hired Matthew Ammel after he retires from the military in 2022; Las Vegas and Saudi Arabia.
Sinema left Congress after the 2024 elections. He declined re-election to the Senate, capping a tumultuous single period in which he alienated liberals and left the Democratic party to become an independent.
He currently works for Hogan Lovells, a Washington-based law and lobbying firm. He lobbied for data center development and research funding for the psychedelic drug ibogaine.
