Transfer deadline day: Record low deals completed on quiet day

A record £3.1bn was spent by Premier League clubs in the summer; This is much more than in the winter period.

The £390 million figure for this window isn’t much lower than previous winters; January is always lower than the summer months because it is known to be quite difficult for clubs to recruit staff effectively.

This is even harder to do on deadline day, but this time it was particularly quiet for a variety of reasons.

It will be one of the big expenditures made last summer, the other may be related to the new Financial Fair Play (FFP) system coming from next season.

Staffing Cost Ratio (SCR) will replace the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR); This means that overall squad costs in the Premier League from 2026-27 should be capped at 85% of the club’s income.

“There will always be some degree of concern about keeping your finances ahead of a much more active market. [the summer window],” said Paul Macdonald of FootballTransfers.com.

“Clubs wanted to make sure they were in a compliant position, rather than having to suffer additional inconvenience due to the new rules.”
