‘Nothing new, we are not the only supplier…’: Moscow after Trump claims India will stop buying Russian oil | India News

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said the US and India had “agreed on a trade deal” under which Washington would reduce mutual tariffs from 25 percent to 18 percent. While announcing the deal, he also claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to “stop buying Russian oil” and buy significantly more from the US. Responding to these allegations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reportedly announced that Russia was not India’s sole oil supplier and stated that Moscow had not yet received any official communication from New Delhi.
This came just a day after Moscow made a similar statement, stating that it had not yet received any official communication from New Delhi.

Answering questions about the US’s claims regarding India’s oil imports from Russia, Peskov said that Russia is aware that it is not India’s only supplier of oil and oil products. He added that New Delhi constantly purchases these products from other countries as well.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that they believe that India’s purchase of hydrocarbons from Russia is “mutually beneficial”.
India’s oil imports from Russia
India is the second largest buyer of Russian crude oil. But beyond oil, India and Russia maintain a strong strategic and diplomatic relationship. Russian President Vladimir Putin also visited India in December 2025.
India-US trade deal
In his Truth Social post, Trump referred to his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, stating that the Prime Minister is one of his closest friends and a strong, respected leader of India.
“It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi of India this morning. He is one of my closest friends and a Strong and Respected Leader of his Country. We talked about many things including trade and ending the war with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil and buy much more from the US and potentially Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR currently going on in Ukraine where thousands of people are dying every week! Out of friendship and respect for the Prime Minister Modi and his upon his request, effective immediately, we have agreed to a Trade Agreement between the United States and India, whereby the United States will reduce the Mutual Tariff from 25% to 18%, and will likewise proceed to reduce Tariffs and Non-Tariff Barriers against the United States to ZERO.”
“The Prime Minister also committed to $500 BILLION in US Energy, Technology, Agriculture, Coal and many other products, as well as “BUY AMERICAN” at a much higher level. Our great relationship with India will be even stronger in the future. PM Modi and I are two people who GET THE JOB DONE, something that cannot be said for most. Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday said India and the US are complementary economies and the trade agreement between the countries is beneficial for both sides.
According to ANI, since Prime Minister Modi visited the US in February 2025, both sides have been negotiating for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) that will be beneficial to both parties.
A phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on February 2 led to the announcement of the trade deal.
