Russia has issued a chilling nuclear warning following the expiration of the US-Russia nuclear weapons treaty. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, known as New START and signed in 2010, was designed to prevent a catastrophic nuclear war. This was also the last nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia. The agreement expired on February 5, raising fears of a resumption of the nuclear arms race.
The Russian Embassy in Kenya sparked alarm on social media after Russian Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev shared an image titled “winter is coming” on X.
While the embassy’s post included the statement “winter is coming”, it was stated that Moscow was “ready for equal and mutually beneficial dialogue”.
Officials added this with a five-word warning: “Before the real freeze begins!”
Medvedev, who played a key role in shaping Russian security policy for a long time, shared a post about the expiration of the agreement and wrote: “For the first time since 1972, Russia (former USSR) and the USA do not have an agreement limiting strategic nuclear forces. SALT I, SALT II, START I, START II, SORT, New START – all are in the past.”
The comments came as Moscow has repeatedly called for the agreement to be extended. Andrei Kolesnik, a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, insisted that Russia had all the retaliatory capabilities it needed and suggested that the situation would worsen if the United States did not act to sign a new agreement.
