EU’s von der Leyen says Ukraine urgently needs more air defense and promises talks at NATO
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backed Zelenskyy’s call for stronger air defenses for Europe, saying it would be discussed at this week’s NATO summit in Ankara and promising that Europe would “keep increasing the pressure until Russia stops the bloodshed.”

“Last night, the Russian regime once again blindly attacked civilians from the air, attacking the capital with more than 400 drones and missiles. Ukraine urgently needs more air defense. We will discuss this issue at the @NATO Summit in Ankara this week.
Last week, we provided the first €4 billion of our €90 billion loan to strengthen Ukraine’s defense with advanced drone technology. More to come very soon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on NATO to take “strong decisions” at this week’s NATO summit in Ankara, after 11 people were killed in another Russian night attack on Kiev.
Nearly 60 more people were injured after 68 missiles and more than 350 drones hit the Ukrainian capital.
he said Ukraine struggles due to “insufficient supply of interceptor missiles” and its partners can help supply air defense systems and “protect the lives of ordinary people.”
“As long as Patriot missiles remain in the stockpiles of our allies, Russia is only given incentives to destroy residential buildings. The USA and Europe have the power to stop this terrorism.” he said in a post on X.
The attack came just days after a similar deadly attack on Kiev. and with the NATO summit starting tomorrow, which is expected to include discussions on Ukraine.
Russia claimed the “major attack” targeted military and energy facilities, despite evidence showing damage to apartment blocks.
