Pizzo Meriggio avalanche tragedy: Two people dead after multiple skier | World | News

Three large avalanches were seen skiers was dragged into scenes of horror at a popular tourist spot. In the incident that occurred today (February 7) at noon local time, skiers who were skiing off-piste near Pizzo Meriggio, Albosaggia, Italy, were hit by an avalanche.
The incident triggered a major emergency response. Three helicopters were deployed: one from the Regional Health Service, one from the Guardia di Finanza and one from the Fire Brigade. Rescue efforts were carried out with coordinated air operations, especially in difficult environmental conditions.
Medical teams were dispatched to the scene and reached 2 people. It was stated that one of the injured died at the scene, while the other was in stable and critical condition.
A third person was later found buried in the snow and rescued by the Fire Brigade’s SAF unit and was sadly pronounced dead. This helicopter was brought in after being deployed to Livigno to provide support to operations related to the Winter Olympics.
The second fatal victim was identified locally as 35-year-old Sebastiano Erba, according to Sondrio today. Erba was reportedly on a ski mountaineering trip when he got tired of helping two other skiers.
Reports say he was probably accompanied by his dog, but authorities have not released any details about it.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. Pizzo Meriggio is a peak in the Orobie Alps in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, near the town of Albosaggia in the province of Sondrio.
