CJI tells West Bengal CM that every natural person should remain on the electoral roll
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, heading a three-judge Supreme Court bench, assured West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, standing in the front row of the crowded courtroom on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, that the Election Commission of India “cannot evade” its Constitutional commitment to ensure inclusion of “every genuine citizen” in the electoral roll during the ongoing exercise of Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Chief Minister Banerjee, who insisted on addressing the delegation, said she had only a “modest request”.
“Sir, save democracy,” Ms. Banerjee insisted.
In an unprecedented incident in the high court’s records, a sitting Prime Minister, filing a writ petition in his personal capacity, moved towards the front of the courtroom and requested the Bench to give him the opportunity to speak for “five minutes”.
