Mapo’s latest outpost is adding granita and brioche to the menu.
It’s worth a trip to Mapo’s new outpost on Oxford Street to try their special seasonal granita range. Daily desserts come in two varieties: a watermelon-lime special, available all summer long, and a special dessert that rotates every two weeks, starting with almonds and continuing with nectarines, coffee, mango or figs. Each flavor comes with an optional dollop of mascarpone “soft cream,” but you can replace this with any Mapo gelato (try ricotta, olive oil, and lemon zest when it appears on the menu).
Every two weeks, you can order a Sicilian breakfast-style granita with a side of pastry. Matteo Pochintesta, the restaurant’s Italian-born owner, says his countrymen may have a lot of rules about food, but he won’t judge you for combining the two, dipping donuts in granita (“like a latte”) or making a granita sandwich.
