A train derailed in southern Switzerland on Monday morning, injuring several people, following an avalanche in the Swiss Alps, according to authorities.

The derailment occurred at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT) in Goppenstein, regional police said in a post on social media platform X. “Train derailment, possible injuries,” police said. It is thought that there were at least 80 passengers on the plane at the time of the incident.

Federal train operator CFF confirmed on its website that “rail traffic between Goppenstein and Brig was interrupted” due to the avalanche. While emergency response teams were working at the scene, the outage also affected services in the area.

According to local media reports, train services were stopped until 16:00 local time while rescue efforts continued. Authorities have not yet released further details about the extent of injuries or the health conditions of those involved.

While the investigation into the incident continues, rescue teams continue their work in the area.
