In a characteristic display of courage and unconventional diplomacy, US President Donald Trump turned a high-level meeting into a “stand up” moment on Thursday, February 19, 2026. At the first meeting of the Board of Peace (BOP), Trump told Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to stand before the audience and Trump boasted about his role in preventing a nuclear war between India and Pakistan.
The event took place at the US Institute of Peace. Surrounded by leaders of countries such as Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, Trump reiterated his claim that India alone mediated the ceasefire in May 2025 following Operation Sindoor.

The room fell silent as President Trump paused his speech to address the Pakistani leader.
Trump said, “I think you (Shehbaz Sharif) should really stand up. Come, please stop for a second.”
As Sharif, clearly uncomfortable, stood up, Trump used the moment to emphasize his influence over New Delhi, adding: “I spoke to Prime Minister Modi; he said he’s watching us right now.”

‘200 percent tariff’ threat: Trump’s strategy to reduce tensions
Trump used the summit to explain the crackdown he claims to have exerted during the 2025 conflict, which began with the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent Indian airstrikes.
Ultimatum: Trump stated that he warned both countries about a complete freeze on trade. “I said if you fight, I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on each of your countries,” Trump told delegates.
“Money” logicRejecting traditional diplomacy, Trump said, “They both wanted to fight. But when it comes to money, there is nothing like money. When it comes to losing a lot of money, I guess we don’t want to fight.”
Aircraft claims are increasing: Trump also raised his estimate of military casualties during the crisis in 2025, claiming 11 “very expensive” jets were shot down; this figure was higher than his original claim of five.
Praise for ‘Marshal’ Asım Münir
Trump was not satisfied with the Prime Minister. He also expressed his “admiration” for the Pakistani Chief of General Staff, naming himself Field Marshal Asim Munir. Trump shared a conversation in which Munir told US Joint Chiefs Chairman Susie Wiles that Trump had “saved 25 million lives” by stopping the war.
India maintains ‘observer’ silence
Despite Trump’s insistence that Prime Minister Modi was “excited” and “watchful”, New Delhi remained moderate at the summit. India was represented only by Namgya Khampa, Chargé d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy, in an observer role.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has consistently rejected Trump’s version, arguing that the 2025 ceasefire was reached through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan, without the mediation of any third party.
