Victorian health watchdog launches Inquiry into Epworth hospital governance over complaints about endometriosis doctor Simon Gordon
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said accusations that a gynecologist had been performing unnecessary surgery on women for several years had been forwarded to police and the state’s health watchdog.
Safer Care Victoria will now have Dr. He said he would sit on a review panel examining the management of Epworth hospital over allegations against Simon Gordon.
This month’s imprint revealed that Gordon was under investigation by the national medical regulator over allegations he performed unnecessary endometriosis surgeries on women, including removing their ovaries and uteruses, despite no clinical evidence justifying the procedures.
Gordon, who retired from Epworth late last year and handed over his medical record last month, denies the allegations.
Epworth has launched an independent investigation into the allegations and law firms are considering a class-action lawsuit following applications from more than 120 women.
Allan and Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said on Tuesday they had asked Safer Care Victoria to sit on the review panel to ensure Epworth management was “rigorous, transparent and focused on patient safety at Epworth”.
Allan confirmed the government had forwarded the allegations against Gordon to Victoria Police.
The Prime Minister also announced that there will be standardized guidelines on how endometriosis is diagnosed.
