Alleged High Country killer Greg Lynn applies for bail ahead of retrial over Carol Clay’s death

Accused High Country killer Greg Lynn is set to launch a new fight for bail just two months after a court overturned his conviction.
The 59-year-old former Jetstar pilot is expected to return to the Supreme Court of Victoria at 9.30am on Thursday to apply for bail.
Mr Lynn is accused of murdering Carol Clay, 73, a powerful member of the Country Women’s Association, while camping in the remote Wonnangatta Valley in Victoria’s High Country in March 2020.
Ms Clay and her partner Russell Hill, 74, disappeared while camping at the Bucks Camp campground; No trace of the couple was found in the search and rescue operation carried out after the burned campsite was found.
Mr. Lynn, an avid hunter and camper, was arrested and charged with murdering the couple about 18 months later.
In 2024, the jury found him guilty of Mrs. Clay’s murder but acquitted him of Mr. Hill’s murder. At the hearing, Mr Lynn told the story of two accidental deaths that occurred after Mr Hill stole a firearm.
Last December, a panel of three Court of Appeal judges overturned Mr Lynn’s conviction and sentence and found that a significant miscarriage of justice had occurred in his case.

The judges found the trial prosecutor had repeatedly breached the rules of fairness by unfairly attacking Mr Lynn’s credibility and dealing with evidence from police ballistics expert Paul Griffiths.
“We conclude, unfortunately, that the conduct of prosecution counsel so compromised the fairness of the applicant’s trial that it resulted in a serious miscarriage of justice,” they wrote.
“In these circumstances, the applicant’s conviction for the murder of Ms Clay cannot be allowed to stand.”
The judges ordered Mr Lynn to receive a new trial and the case was sent back to the Supreme Court of Victoria.
