New Zealand were restricted to 159 for 7
Electing to bat first, New Zealand were restricted to 159 in seven of their 20 overs. A few batsmen got starts but none could convert them into significant scores. Glenn Phillips scored 39 points, Tim Seifert 35, Finn Allen 29 and Mark Chapman 15 points.
England’s spinners dominated the innings and captured seven wickets collectively; this was the most runs scored by English spinners in a T20 World Cup match. Will Jacks (2/23), Adil Rashid (2/28) and Rehan Ahmed (2/28) led the effort, while Liam Dawson also contributed 1/32. Rachin Ravindra (3/19) was New Zealand’s standout bowler.
England chase sees multiple contributions
Chasing 160, England lost early wickets but recovered with significant contributions from Tom Banton (33), Will Jacks (32 not out), Harry Brook (26), Sam Curran (24) and Rehan Ahmed (19 not out). A superb final display from Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed, which included multiple boundaries and sixes, guided England to a 4-wicket victory in 19.3 overs.
England’s win makes their Super Eights campaign perfect and puts New Zealand in a strong position in Group 2. Pakistan’s semi-final hopes are still alive, but hinge on their final Super 8 match against Sri Lanka and England getting a big win over New Zealand.
