NSUI holds fort in Patna University Students’ Union poll

The National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, has won the posts of president and general secretary, holding the fort after a long time, the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU) announced late at night on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, has assumed the posts of joint secretary and Treasurer.
However, the vote percentage this time was extremely low at 37.84%, while the last (2025) was 45.25%. There were some stray incidents of violence and shooting on campus on election day, but police were deployed on campus to ensure the poll was conducted peacefully.
“This was due to strict guidelines in the poll being followed and students’ apathetic, dull and docile approach to campus elections; the vote percentage dropped by almost 7% this time,” said Shankar Kumar, chief election officer and professor of Patna Science College. Hindu.
In 1980, NSUI candidate Anil Sharma and in 1984 Shambhu Sharma won the post of university chancellor respectively.
NSUI candidate Shantanu Shekhar and Khushi Kumari assumed the duties of president and general secretary on Saturday, February 28, 2026, after a long time. “Though the elections were not held on the lines of the political party, it is time for the BJP to introspect as the party is in power in the state in coalition with other parties and has all the MLAs of the Patna city district,” said Manish Kumar, senior journalist in Patna.
The ruling NDA, along with the BJP, JD-U and other allies, is in power in Bihar and earlier, several-time junior party MLA from Bankipore constituency of Patna Nitin Nabin was showing keen interest in the PUSU elections.
Mr Nabin, 45, was elected national president of the party in January 2026 this year.
Earlier, several prominent political figures of the State had captured the prestigious positions of Patna University Students’ Union. Former Prime Minister and Rashtriya Janata President Dal Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Deputy Chief Minister and senior state BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi and former Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad were elected as president, general secretary and deputy general secretary of PUSU respectively in 1973.
Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader of the state Ashwani Kumar Choubey was also elected president of PSU in 1978.
NSUI candidates for the post of PUSU president and general secretary this time defeated JD-U Prince Kumar’s nearest rival by 1496 votes, while Khushi Kumari defeated Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal Pratyush Raj’s rival by 553 votes.
However, ABVP’s Abhishek Kumar and Harshvardhan won the Joint Secretary and Treasurer posts, defeating NSUI and JD-U candidates respectively.
The highest voting percentage was reported from Patna Law College (50.66%) and Patna Science College (45.7%) respectively, while the lowest voting percentage was reported from BN College (21.2%) and Magadh Mahila College (21.72%) respectively.
First-time Independent girl candidate Shifat Faiz won the Union vice-president post by defeating JD-U candidate Ayush Harsh by 71 votes.
While congratulating the winning candidates, senior state Congress leader and former party MLC Prem Chandra Mishra said, “Winning of NSUI candidates for the posts of President and General Secretary reflects the thoughts of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.” State party spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari also congratulated the winning candidates and said, “the result shows the true mood of the youth in the state.”
